Fifteen minutes at a time is the usual limit, and almost all devices are set to this: they switch off automatically after this time. Two to three such sessions a day are no problem for most people. Those who go longer risk sore neck muscles and pressure sores on their skin. Here's why this limit exists and how you can tell if you've gone too far.

Why do the devices switch off after 15 minutes?

The shutdown is not a marketing decision, but has two solid reasons.

The engine is warming up. Shiatsu massage heads use gears in a confined space, and many models also include a heating element. Continuous use noticeably reduces their lifespan.

The neck is more sensitive than the back. There is little tissue between the skin and the cervical vertebrae. What feels pleasant on the back after twenty minutes causes irritation on the neck in the same amount of time. Therefore, the threshold is lower here than with a massage chair, see [link/reference]. how often you are allowed to use a massage chair.

What is useful for everyday life

  • Started: Five minutes, lowest setting, without heat. Even if it feels harmless.
  • Normal operation: ten to fifteen minutes, once or twice a day.
  • Upper limit: Three rounds per day with at least two hours in between.
  • After sports: Rather shorter, the muscle is already irritated.

A second round immediately after the first is pointless. The effect doesn't come from duration, but from repetition over several days.

How you know it was too much

  • Sore neck muscles the next day. The most common sign, harmless, but a clear indication of too long or too intense.
  • Red pressure marks, which are still visible after an hour.
  • Headache after use. Then the pressure was too high or too high at the base of the skull.
  • Tingling in the arm or hand. Stop immediately. This needs to be checked by a doctor, not massaged away.

Where the device is not allowed

Not on the cervical spine itself, but on the muscles next to it. Not on the front of the neck, where the carotid artery and larynx lie close to the skin. And not directly under the base of the skull with full force.

Heating function and time

Heat prolongs the perceived benefit but shortens the effective time. It relaxes, but it also masks pressure pain, which would be a warning sign. With heat, ten minutes are more effective than fifteen.

Anyone who looks at their skin after use will notice the difference immediately. Information on how heat affects larger devices can be found here: Massage chair with heat function.

Devices compared

Shiatsu devices with rotating heads are more powerful and should be used for shorter periods. Vibration cushions are gentler; twenty minutes is not a problem with them. Neck braces fall somewhere in between.

The choice is available at the neck massage devices, the larger devices at the MassagersOver 40 people are allowed to try it out. locations.

Briefly summarized

  • Fifteen minutes at a time is the maximum; most devices switch off automatically.
  • Two to three sessions per day with at least two hours in between.
  • The neck can tolerate less than the back because there is hardly any tissue between the skin and the vertebrae.
  • Apply heat for about ten minutes, because heat masks pressure pain.
  • Tingling in the arm or hand means stop immediately and get it checked out.
