A hand massage requires no equipment or training. Eight minutes, some oil or cream, and a firm surface are all you need. The sequence goes from large to small, from the forearm to the fingertips, and this order is the real trick.
Preparation
Wash and dry your hands, then apply a small amount of oil or cream to both hands. Without lubricant, the skin will drag instead of the hand gliding over it, which is both unpleasant and ineffective.
The forearm rests best on a table or thigh. Holding it freely in the air causes it to tense up, and a tense muscle cannot be relaxed.
Steps one and two: Forearm
- Smooth out the flexed side. From the elbow to the wrist, using the thumb of the other hand, five to eight strokes. This is where the muscles that close the fingers are located.
- Smooth out the stretched side. The same direction applies to the outside. Those who type a lot will often find this to be the more pressure-sensitive of the two.
Steps three to four: Palm
- Circle the ball of your thumb. The fleshy bulge under the thumb is the largest muscle in the hand. Circle it with the thumb of your other hand for about a minute.
- Work out the spaces between. Small muscles lie on the back of the hand, between the long bones. Run your thumb along the grooves from the wrist to the knuckles. This area is almost always overlooked.
Steps five and six: Fingers and finishing
- Fingers one at a time. Stroke from root to tip, then gently roll each joint between two fingers. No pulling, no forced cracking.
- Smooth out. Wipe your entire hand from fingertips to wrists three times, with decreasing pressure. This ends the massage and is more than just a gesture, because it allows the sensation to subside.

How to recognize excessively high pressure
Massage pressure feels dull and is tolerable without holding your breath. If it becomes sharp, burning, or tingling, the pressure is too high or the massage area is incorrect. Tingling extending to the fingers indicates an irritated nerve and is always a reason to stop immediately.
A second indicator will appear the following day. Mild muscle soreness is normal. If the discomfort is more severe than before, it was too much.

When one's own strength is not enough
This is precisely where the limitations of self-massage lie: it requires a strong hand, and those with hand problems often lack one. In such cases, a device takes over the work, into which the hand is placed.

Oil, cream, or nothing
A lubricant is not a luxury. Without one, the massaging hand pushes the skin along instead of gliding over it, irritating the skin without reaching the muscle.
Any neutral oil is suitable, including cooking oil. Cream absorbs more quickly and needs to be reapplied, but it doesn't leave hands feeling greasy. For very dry, mature skin, oil is the better choice because it remains lubricated for longer.
When a massage is particularly worthwhile
Apply it immediately after work, while your hand is still warm, and in the evening before going to sleep. Both of these are times when your hand is naturally at rest, and the effect then lasts until you fall asleep.
Massage is less beneficial immediately before strenuous activity. Relaxed muscles function slightly less precisely in the short term, which can be noticeable when playing the piano or performing fine motor tasks.
