A hand massage isn't based on any secret doctrine, but on anatomy. Four zones are key: the palm under the thumb, the area between the metacarpal bones, the finger joints, and the wrist. If you know these four, you don't need a points card.

The ball of the thumb

The fleshy bulge below the thumb is the largest muscle in the hand. It is involved in every gripping action and is almost always firm in people who use a mouse a lot or handle tools.

The massage is performed using circular movements of the opposite thumb, from the wrist edge towards the base of the thumb. About one minute per hand is sufficient. If the sensation becomes sharp rather than dull, the pressure is too high.

The spaces between the metacarpal bones

Small muscles lie between the long bones of the palm, spreading and bringing the fingers together. They can be felt on the back of the hand when the fingers are spread.

Here, you work with your thumb in the grooves between the bones, from the wrist towards the knuckles. This area is often forgotten in self-massage and is also the one where the effects of hours of typing are most noticeable.

The finger joints

Each finger is worked on individually: stroke from the base to the tip, then gently roll each joint between two fingers of the other hand. Do not pull or force any cracking.

Nodular thickenings on the joints should not be subjected to targeted pressure. These are bony growths, not hardened muscle. The article explains why this is particularly important in cases of osteoarthritis. Handheld massager for osteoarthritis.

The wrist and the transition to the forearm

The tendons that move the fingers run through the wrist and their muscles are located in the forearm. Massaging only the hand ignores the underlying cause.

Therefore, the forearm is included: the inner flexor side and the outer extensor side, each stroked from the elbow to the wrist. This is the hand movement that makes the biggest difference when typing causes discomfort.

The zone that is omitted

On the inside of the wrist, in line with the index finger, the median nerve runs through a narrow canal. Applying strong pressure there causes tingling that can extend down into the fingers. This is not a sign of the treatment being effective, but rather nerve irritation, and should be avoided.

Anyone who already experiences numbness or tingling in their fingers at night should avoid that area entirely and consult a doctor to determine the cause. In such cases, a device is not a suitable self-treatment.

order and duration

It makes sense to start with the largest part and work from the smallest: first the forearm, then the palm of the hand, then the spaces between the fingers, and finally the fingers. Five to eight minutes per hand is enough; after that, the tissue hardly reacts to the stimulus anymore.

Anyone wishing to replicate the same sequence with one device can find the different types under massagers; which one is suitable for which complaint, limits the Device finder .

The point between thumb and forefinger

The skin fold between the thumb and index finger is the most well-known point on the entire hand, and in traditional Chinese medicine it has its own name. Anatomically, a small muscle lies there that pulls the thumb towards the index finger and is involved in every grasping action.

It is noticeably sensitive to pressure in most people, and there's a simple reason for that: it's constantly used and never stretched. It's massaged by taking the crease between the thumb and forefinger of your other hand and gently kneading it.

One often overlooked point: this is frequently omitted from many pregnancy instructions. While there is no conclusive evidence of any danger, caution is advised until the question is resolved, and medical advice should be sought if in doubt.
