You rarely buy a massage chair twice. The decision almost always hinges on the same seven points, and the most important one isn't found in any data sheet: whether the chair suits your body. Here's what to look for when buying one, what really differentiates the technology, and why ten minutes of test sitting is more worthwhile than ten hours of research.
1. Fit takes precedence over technology
A massage chair's rollers move along a fixed track. If you sit too high or too low, the rollers will work on the back of your head instead of your neck, or on your lower back instead of your shoulder blades. No program can compensate for this. The crucial factor is not so much your overall height, but the ratio of your torso to your legs: Two people who are 185 centimeters tall will sit differently if one has long legs and a short torso. Therefore, height specifications are guidelines, not absolute limits. Many chairs are also a good fit for people who are 190 centimeters tall or taller; it depends on the model.
2. What distinguishes 2D, 3D and 4D
The number describes in how many directions the massage rollers move.
- 2D It moves the rollers up, down, and sideways. A solid basic massage, usually in the more affordable range.
- 3D This adds depth. The rollers extend further out from the backrest, allowing for noticeable adjustment of the pressure.
- 4D Additionally, it changes the speed and pressure within a movement. This makes the sequence appear smoother and less mechanical.
More dimensions mean more adjustment options, but not automatically a more pleasant massage. A well-tuned 3D chair can feel better than a poorly tuned 4D chair.
3. The space he really needs
Two dimensions are important. First, the footprint when upright, and second, the distance from the wall the chair needs to recline. Many models are designed as wall-huggers: they slide forward when you lean back instead of tilting backward, and therefore often only require a few centimeters of clearance from the wall. Before ordering, also measure the path into your home, including door widths, stairwells, and any turns in the hallway. Depending on the model, a massage chair can weigh well over 100 kilograms and cannot be tilted like a sofa.
4. Price categories and what they mean

5. Delivery and assembly
Massage chairs are delivered by a freight company; the delivery date will be arranged. Clarify three things before purchasing: Will it be delivered to the room where it will be used, or only to the curb? Will the device be assembled and connected? Will the packaging be taken away? A chair sitting in three boxes in the hallway is not a massage chair.
6. Service, warranty and spare parts
The point most easily overlooked when buying a car, yet most urgently needed after three years. Specifically: Who does the repairs, where are they carried out, and how long do they take? A provider with its own workshop and team of technicians is quite different from a hotline that refers customers to the manufacturer. 7. Specialist shop or online
The question arises less often than one might think, because the two usually go hand in hand: researching online, sitting down in person, and buying where the service is located. A dedicated brick-and-mortar store has the advantage of having someone on hand to explain the programs. A purely online purchase has the advantage of a 14-day right of withdrawal without giving a reason. These two options are not mutually exclusive.
