There is no fixed waiting period for everyone, as it depends on the procedure, wound healing, and pre-existing conditions. As a general guideline: The operated area remains untreated until the wound has closed and is free of irritation, usually for several weeks. Other areas of the body can often be treated sooner. Clearance comes from the treating physician, not from a guidebook. Here's what you need to know.

Why the waiting time is not a fixed amount

After surgery, three things happen simultaneously: the wound closes, the underlying tissue regenerates, and the circulatory system is under strain in the first few days. Massage affects all three. It increases blood flow, moves tissue, and can reduce swelling. This is desirable later on but risky in the early stages.

And then there's the most important point: After many procedures, the risk of thrombosis is increased, often for weeks. Leg massage should then explicitly be performed by a doctor, not by oneself.

The three time windows

  • The first few days. Do not perform self-massage, even on distant parts of the body, while you are still hospitalized or under close supervision. Any medically necessary treatments, such as lymphatic drainage or respiratory therapy, will be prescribed by the hospital.
  • After the wound has healed, usually two to six weeks. Areas far from the surgical site can often be used again. For example, the feet after shoulder surgery, and the neck after abdominal surgery. Asking beforehand remains essential.
  • After complete healing, often after three months. The operated area can also be considered again, usually with targeted scar work by a specialist, not with a device.

In major surgeries on the heart, blood vessels or spine, these windows shift significantly backwards.

What remains taboo in any case

  • Fresh scars and the area around them, as long as they are red, swollen, or sensitive.
  • Drains, catheters, ports and their surroundings.
  • Legs in cases of increased risk of thrombosis, without medical clearance.
  • Any area that is warm, red, and tender to the touch could be an infection.

Warning signs that should be addressed with phone calls instead of massage: fever, increasing wound pain, oozing from the wound, swollen calf on one side, shortness of breath.

And massage chairs or foot pedals?

The same logic applies, with one additional limitation: a device cannot exclude a single area. A massage chair uses rollers along the entire spine and air cushions on the arms, hips, and legs. Someone with a fresh scar on their back cannot exclude that area.

Then there's the process of getting up and sitting down itself. A low-slung chair requires core strength, which is precisely what's lacking after abdominal and spinal surgery. Those considering a chair after a herniated disc can find more information here: Massage chair for herniated discsRegarding the frequency after release: how often you are allowed to use a massage chair.

What makes sense in the meantime

  • Move as much as permitted. Getting up and walking are the most effective ways to protect against thrombosis.
  • Wear compression stockings, as long as they are prescribed, even if they are annoying.
  • Have the approved areas treated. Stiff shoulders after two weeks in bed are a real problem and can often be treated early.
  • Treat the scar if the doctor's office allows it. Usually only after complete wound healing, with gentle shifting instead of pressure.

Briefly summarized

  • There is no general waiting time; it depends on the procedure and the healing process.
  • The operated area remains untreated until the wound is closed and free of irritation.
  • If there is an increased risk of thrombosis, the legs should be examined by a doctor.
  • A device cannot skip a single spot; that is its limitation.
  • Fever, oozing, increasing pain or one-sided calf swelling are reasons to call, not to massage.
