Depending on the program, a massage chair operates at a noise level roughly equivalent to a refrigerator or a quiet conversation. You can watch TV next to it, but you can't make a phone call without it being noticeable. The noise comes from three sources: the air compressor, the roller motors, and the rail. Where the noise is coming from
- The air compressor. The loudest source. It inflates the air cushions on the arms, shoulders, hips, and calves. You can hear a steady pumping sound, along with the hissing as they deflate. Programs with a lot of air massage are therefore louder than programs that only involve the back.
- The roller motors. A deep humming sound that increases with intensity. During tapping programs, a rhythmic tapping sound is added, which is transmitted through the backrest.
- The rail. A faint whirring sound can be heard as the roller unit moves up and down the back. With S- and L-rails, a brief jerking sound can sometimes be heard at the transitions.
- The erection motor. Only when adjusting the backrest, but clearly audible.
The surface underneath also plays a role. An armchair on laminate or tiles sounds louder than the same armchair on carpet because hard floors reflect the structure-borne sound.
What is normal and what is not
Normal sounds include steady pumping, hissing during draining, humming of the motors and a click at the end of a program when the roller unit returns to its starting position.
Not normal are: grinding or scratching noises that get louder with each drive; a dry squeaking sound; a cracking sound under load; and a compressor that runs continuously even when no air program is active. Such noises should be checked, see Repairing a massage chair.
What can be done about the noise
- Decoupling the substrate. A felt mat or a flat rug under the feet of the chair reduces a noticeable amount of noise. That's the single most effective measure.
- Distance to the wall. Sound is reflected directly off the wall. Ten to fifteen centimeters are often enough.
- Select program. Those who want peace and quiet in the evening should choose a back program instead of a full-body program with plenty of breathing exercises.
- Reduce intensity. The highest setting is also the loudest, and it is rarely the best.

When others are sleeping in the house
The practical question is usually: Can I still sit in my armchair at 10 p.m. without waking anyone? In an apartment with a normal wall, this is usually no problem in the next room, but directly below in an older building it's less likely, because structure-borne noise travels through the ceiling.
