For muscle soreness and perceived exhaustion, the research on massage is unusually clear: In an analysis of 99 studies, massage performed best among all regeneration methods. However, these studies used hands, not devices. What can and cannot be generalized to massage is explained here.
What is proven
The most important work on this topic is a review and meta-analysis by Dupuy et al., published in Frontiers in Physiology in 2018. It summarized 99 studies on post-exercise recovery and compared various methods: active recovery, massage, compression, cold water, and contrast baths.
Two results are particularly relevant in practice. Massage reduced muscle soreness and perceived fatigue more effectively than any other method tested. It also lowered inflammatory markers in the blood, including creatine kinase and interleukin 6.
For comparison: Our own analysis from 2021 found no advantage to stretching after exercise compared to simply resting. The detailed analysis can be found in the article. Does massage help with muscle soreness?.
What of this can be transferred to a device
The caveat belongs here, not in the fine print: The studies used hands. The principle, namely mechanical pressure on the muscles shortly after exertion, is transferable. However, the precise intensity of the effect is not.
What a pistol can do compared to a hand is depth and endurance. What it can't do is provide feedback. A therapist feels when you tense up and adjusts. The device keeps striking.

What it has proven useful for in practice
- Warm-up before sports. Thirty to sixty seconds per muscle group, low intensity. Warms up without causing fatigue.
- After training. Within two hours, across a wide area, medium level.
- Individual fixed positions. Here it is superior to a neck support device or chair because it works with pinpoint accuracy.
- Hard-to-reach muscles. Calves and back of the thighs are rarely worked on with the hands.
Where advertising promises more than it delivers
Three claims are constantly encountered, and none of them have a solid basis.
Release the fascia. The term sounds technical, but usually doesn't mean anything verifiable. The idea that connective tissue can be permanently reshaped is unproven.
Detoxify and stimulate the lymphatic system. A sales argument without substance.
Reduce cellulite. There is a separate post with the honest answer to this: Does a massage gun help against cellulite?.
What remains is still remarkable: less muscle soreness, less fatigue, and more flexible muscles. That's more than most devices in this price range can offer.
For whom it's worthwhile and for whom it isn't.
It is worthwhile for those who exercise regularly, for recurring tension in certain areas, and for anyone who wants to control their own treatment.
It's less worthwhile if you're looking for general relaxation rather than focused work. A neck support device or a chair is more comfortable for that; see [link/reference]. Neck massager or massage gun.

Briefly summarized
- Of 99 studies evaluated, massage emerged as the most effective remedy for muscle soreness.
- The studies used hands, not devices. The principle is transferable, not the number.
- Effective during warm-up, recovery, and on individual tight spots.
- Fascia release, detoxification and cellulite reduction are advertising promises without evidence.
- For broad-area relaxation, a neck support device or chair is the better choice.
