The lower back is difficult to reach with most massage devices. Neck pillows end between the shoulder blades, and while seat cushions extend to the pelvis, they tend to press flat against it. Belts, small cushions, and handheld devices are what actually reach the lower back. This is due to anatomy.

Why the lower back is a special case

The rib cage acts as a counterweight between the shoulder blades. A device can press there without any movement. This counterweight is absent below the ribs. The abdominal cavity gives way, and the spine assumes a natural lordotic curve in this area.

This has two consequences. First, a straight massage stroke slips past the muscles in a hollow back, only touching the highest points. Second, the kidneys are located laterally to the spine in this area, and they should not be subjected to constant mechanical pressure.

What types of buildings will be built there?

  • Massage belt. It wraps around the waist and works with vibration or compression from the outside in. Because it fits snugly, it follows the curve.
  • Small Shiatsu cushion. It is clamped behind the lower back, for example between the back and the chair back. It provides strong pressure at a specific point, but must be moved manually.
  • Handheld device. It reaches every spot, even on the sides, but requires strength in the arm and is uncomfortable on the lower back when used by oneself.

A device specifically designed for this zone can be found at Lower back massager with heatThe remaining types are listed in the overview. back massagers.

Where no massage is given

A massage head should not be placed directly on the spinous processes, that is, on the bony row in the middle. There is no muscle between them. Massage should be done on the two adjacent muscle groups, about two to three finger widths to the side of the center.

The area below the last rib is also left untouched. The kidneys lie close to the surface there. A belt that encircles the waist applies gentle pressure in this area. Rotating knots have no place there.

When the pain radiates down the leg

If the pain radiates from the lower back, across the buttocks, and down the leg, this indicates nerve involvement. This could be caused by the sciatic nerve, a herniated disc, or tense gluteal muscles. In such cases, a diagnostic device is not a suitable tool for self-diagnosis.

The sensible order is: first, have a doctor determine the cause of the pain, then decide whether massage is even appropriate. Different rules apply in cases of known disc problems, which are explained in the article. Back massager for herniated discs to stand.

Sitting is the most common cause

The lower back starts to bother most people after prolonged sitting. The hip flexors shorten, the pelvis tilts, and the lumbar muscles counteract this. A device relieves the resulting tension, but it doesn't realign the pelvis.

Therefore, lower back massage works best in combination with movement. Get up every hour, stretch your hip flexors, lie on your back with your legs bent. The machine is the end of the evening, not a replacement for the day.
