Very careful application is possible on the jaw muscle itself, but not on the temporomandibular joint. The difference lies in the few centimeters, and therein lies the risk. Anyone experiencing nighttime teeth grinding or jaw pain should have the cause investigated before using a device. This is where the limitations lie.

Which muscle is meant?

The masseter muscle is located on the side of the lower jaw, about two finger-widths in front of the ear. You can find it by briefly biting down: the muscle that bulges under your fingers is the masseter muscle. With severe teeth grinding, it is hard and sensitive to pressure.

Directly above it, in front of the ear, is the temporomandibular joint. There's no muscle there, just joint and bone. A gun doesn't belong there.

Why special caution is required here

  • Little tissue. The muscle layer is thin, the bone lies close underneath.
  • Sensitive neighborhood. The ear, salivary gland, and facial nerve are located in close proximity.
  • The joint itself. Impacts to a joint can worsen symptoms instead of relieving them.
  • The head. The device should never be placed on the skull, not even on a low setting.

If anything, then like this.

  • Softest attachment, i.e., pillow or foam. Never cone, never fork.
  • Lowest level. Without exception.
  • At most ten to fifteen seconds per side.
  • Only on the masseter muscle, at least two finger widths away from the ear.
  • Stop immediately if you experience ringing in the ears, dizziness, joint pain, or facial numbness.

What usually helps better

When jaw problems are caused by teeth grinding, the order is clear: first determine the cause, then treat it. This includes a dental examination, often a night guard, and frequently physiotherapy. These are proven effective approaches.

The honest assessment

There are no studies that confirm the effectiveness of a massage gun for the masseter muscle. What does exist are anecdotal reports, and these are mixed. Anyone trying it should consider it an experiment, not a treatment, and consult a doctor if no improvement is seen after two weeks.

Your own fingers are gentler and easier to control at this point: a circular motion with two fingertips on the masseter muscle, one minute per side. This reaches the same tissue without impact.

When not at all

In cases of acute toothache, after dental or jaw surgery, inflammation, facial swelling, unexplained tinnitus, and facial paralysis, the matter should be treated by a doctor or dentist. See also... Massage after surgery.

Briefly summarized

  • Softest attachment, lowest setting, no more than ten to fifteen seconds per side.
  • At least two finger widths away from the ear.
  • If you grind your teeth, first consult your dentist; often a splint is the right solution.
  • Your own fingertips are softer and easier to control at this point.
