When used on muscles, a massage gun is safe for healthy adults. It becomes dangerous in three areas: over bones and joints, on the sides and front of the neck, and over the abdomen, kidneys, and spine. There is also a list of people who should not use one at all. Both lists and the reasons behind them are provided here.

What the device does technically

A massage gun uses an attachment to strike a small area between 1.800 and 3.200 times per minute, with a stroke of about ten to sixteen millimeters. This force is its sole purpose: it reaches deeper than a hand. That's precisely why it can be problematic when used in the wrong places.

The comparison helps with understanding: A neck device presses and kneads, a pistol strikes. What this means in practice is explained in the article. Neck massager or massage gun.

The places where no work is being done

  • The front and sides of the neck. The carotid artery, larynx, and nerves lie directly beneath the skin there. High-frequency impacts don't belong there.
  • About bones and joints. Shinbone, elbow, kneecap, collarbone, spine. There is no padding in between.
  • The abdomen and kidney region. Internal organs are unprotected.
  • Back of the knee, groin, armpit. There, blood vessels and lymph nodes run superficially.
  • The head. Not even on a low setting.

The following muscles are permitted: calves, thighs, buttocks, back next to the spine, trapezius muscle between neck and shoulder, upper arms.

Those who should not use them

  • In case of acute thrombosis or suspected thrombosis. The most important exclusion: Blows to a blood clot are dangerous.
  • For pronounced varicose veins. See Is it okay to massage if you have varicose veins?.
  • In cases of osteoporosis. Reduced bone density cannot withstand impacts, see Massage chairs for osteoporosis.
  • For fresh injuries, bruises, sprains. During the first few days, the plants are kept cool and not processed.
  • After operationsuntil the wound is closed and free of irritation. See Massage after surgery.
  • When taking blood-thinning medication. Bruises develop much more easily.
  • During pregnancy without consulting a doctor.
  • In case of impaired sensation, for example, through nerve damage. Those who don't feel the pain cannot use it as a boundary.

What you should stop immediately

Sharp or burning pain. Numbness or tingling that occurs during application. Dizziness. Bluning of the skin. And anything that feels like bone instead of muscle.

A dull, slightly unpleasant pulling sensation is normal, as is redness that disappears after twenty minutes.

The three mistakes almost everyone makes

  • Staying in one place for too long. Fifteen to thirty seconds per spot is sufficient. Two minutes in the same spot will cause bruising.
  • Pressing too hard. The device works through frequency, not pressure. You guide it, you don't press it.
  • Highest level from the start. The strongest setting is intended for large, thick muscle groups, not for the neck.

What a device cannot replace

For pain of unclear origin, radiating into the arm or leg, and symptoms lasting longer than two weeks, a medical evaluation should be the first step. A massage gun treats muscles, nothing else.

If there are no objections, the devices will be located at the Massage guns, including the NAIPO Massage GunOver 40 people are allowed to try it out. locations.

Briefly summarized

  • Stop immediately if you experience sharp pain, numbness, dizziness, or bruising.
  • Anyone who cannot reliably feel pain should not dose the device based on feeling.
