In cases of osteoarthritis in the finger joints, massage can loosen the surrounding muscles and connective tissue, but it does not change the condition of the articular cartilage. Whether a device is suitable in a particular case depends on whether the joint is currently inflamed. This distinction is more important than any device feature.

What osteoarthritis in the hand means

Osteoarthritis is the wear and tear of the articular cartilage. In the hands, it most commonly affects the carpometacarpal joint of the thumb and the distal interphalangeal joints of the fingers. Typical symptoms include pain upon starting movement after rest, morning stiffness, and, over time, nodular thickenings on the joints.

The muscles around a painful joint tense up to protect it. This protective tension is what responds to massage. The joint itself lies beneath this tension and cannot be reached from the outside.

The difference between calm and inflamed

An arthritic joint can become inflamed in phases. During these phases, it is warm, swollen, red, and painful even at rest. This is called activated osteoarthritis.

  • Quiet phase. The joint is cold, and pain is present especially during exertion. Gentle massage with heat is usually well tolerated in this case.
  • Activated phase. The joint is warm and swollen. The device should not be used, and heat should be avoided altogether. At this stage, cooling and medical treatment are the preferred approach.

Anyone unsure of the difference should consult a doctor before first using this product. It's not a formality: applying heat to an inflamed joint will worsen the symptoms.

What studies suggest

The research on massage for hand osteoarthritis is limited and the findings are cautious. Studies suggest that heat applications and gentle movement can have a positive effect on stiffness and pain perception. However, this has not been proven, nor is it seriously claimed, that it can halt cartilage degeneration.

The benefits of movement are well-documented. Hand exercises from occupational therapy are included in almost every guideline for hand osteoarthritis. A massage device can make these exercises more comfortable by loosening the hand beforehand, but it doesn't replace them.

Things to consider when using the application

The exercise should be performed with the lightest pressure that is still perceptible, and for a short duration. Five to ten minutes is sufficient. A pneumatic device is usually preferable to kneading rollers because it works over a larger area and does not apply pressure to a single joint.

The thickened nodules on the finger joints are not specifically treated. They are bony growths, not hardened muscle, and pressure on them is painful without having any effect.

Suitable designs are listed under massagers, the selection based on complaint limits the Device finder .

When the device stops working altogether

Do not use a blood test strip if the joint is inflamed or overheated, if there is a recent injury, if the skin is open or irritated, or after hand surgery, unless the treating physician has given their consent. The same applies to numbness or tingling in the fingers, as this may indicate nerve involvement and should be investigated.

The general rule is: If the pain increases during use or is worse the following day than before, use should be discontinued. This rule is the same as with other devices and is explained in the article. Are massage devices dangerous? more detailed explanation.
