Typing and mouse use causes discomfort in the hand, but their origin is usually in the forearm. The muscles that move the fingers are located there and extend via long tendons to the fingertips. Massaging only the hand treats the end of the chain and neglects the beginning.
What actually works when typing
The fingers themselves only have small muscles in the hand that spread and bring them together. Everything related to strength comes from the forearm: the flexors on the inside, the extensors on the outside.
When typing and holding a mouse, the extensor muscles are constantly slightly tense because they stabilize the wrist. This continuous tension without movement is more tiring than vigorous work with breaks.
The three places that count
- extensor surface of the forearm, about a hand's breadth below the elbow. Pressure-sensitive in almost everyone who spends a lot of time at the computer.
- flexor side of the forearm, same height. It's more likely to be noticed when gripping firmly than when tapping.
- thenar eminence. It works with every mouse click and is permanently set for users who click frequently.
How these positions are handled is explained in the article. Perform hand massage yourselfThe order is important: forearm first, hand afterwards.
What a device can do here
A handheld massager reaches the hand, but not the forearm. For the forearm, a massage gun with a soft attachment, a handheld device, or simply the thumb of your other hand are suitable.
If you want to cover both areas, you'll get further with two tools than with one expensive one. Which attachments are suitable for abdominal muscles and which aren't is explained in the article. Massage gun attachments.

What is more effective than any massage
Tension arises from holding something without movement. Anything that brings about movement addresses the cause rather than the result.
Specifically, this means: fully opening and closing your hand once an hour, rotating your wrist, and gently shaking out your forearms. This also requires a workspace where your forearm rests on something rather than hovering freely, and a mouse that isn't too small. A device can release the tension that the day has brought in; it doesn't prevent it from coming in.
When it is not a case for self-treatment
Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers, especially at night, requires investigation to determine the cause. This could indicate compression of the median nerve at the wrist, and massage will not help with this.
The same applies to loss of strength, pain that worsens over weeks, and swelling of the wrist. In all three cases, the order is the same: first investigate, then decide. The general limits are explained in the article. Are massage devices dangerous?, the construction types under massagers.
Why the term "mouse arm" is misleading
Mouse arm is not a diagnosis, but a collective term for discomfort that occurs when working at a computer. A variety of things can be behind it: an irritated tendon insertion at the elbow, tense forearm muscles, nerve compression at the wrist, or a problem that actually originates in the neck.
That's why general advice is of little use here. Someone who has been experiencing symptoms for weeks will save time by having them diagnosed once, instead of trying four different remedies one after the other.
More comes from the neck than you think.
The nerves for the arm and hand originate in the cervical spine. Irritation there can manifest as tingling or weakness in the hand, without anything being found in the arm itself.
Those who sit at a computer often experience both: tense forearms and a forward head posture. Treating the neck area as well is therefore often more effective. The article explains what helps there. Neck massager for text neck.
