Hamburg's famous sights are on every list. This one gathers the places you might only discover on a second visit and explains why each one is worth seeing. All eight are free or cost the price of a public transport ticket.
In the port
- Ferry 62 instead of harbor tour. It's part of the local transport network, passes the same quays, and costs the normal fare. Almost empty in the early morning.
- The view from Steinwerder. Go through the Old Elbe Tunnel to the south side and look back. The best view of the city skyline, and practically nobody is there.
- The Kontorhaus district. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015, along with the Speicherstadt (Warehouse District), but it is rarely visited. The Chilehaus, with its brick ship's prow, is more impressive from the outside than from the inside.
Out in the open
Jenischpark in Othmarschen is an English landscape park with mature trees and views of the Elbe River; even on busy Sundays, you can still find an empty meadow there. Next door is the Botanical Garden in Klein Flottbek, which is free and even quieter.
Öjendorf Park in the east is larger than the city park and is practically never visited. Those seeking peace and quiet rather than tourist attractions go there.
By the water, away from the crowds
The Alster hiking trail leads north from Winterhude out of the city, through green spaces, with exits at almost every bridge. It is a quiet alternative to the Outer Alster loop, which is crowded on weekends.

The tropical greenhouses in Planten un Blomen are open year-round and free of charge. They are the only warm, green indoor space in the city center that can be entered without a ticket, and very few people know about it.

What the time of day means
Most of Hamburg's hidden gems aren't unknown places, but rather well-known places at the right time. The Speicherstadt in the morning, the Plaza in the evening, the Elbe beach during the week.
Saturday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. is the worst time everywhere. Sunday morning before 10 a.m. is the best, and this difference is more significant than any choice of location.
A tip for in between
A sightseeing day rarely fails due to the itinerary, but usually because of tired feet. Those who take a real break in the afternoon instead of continuing to walk will see more in the evening.

What you can save yourself
The fish market on Sunday morning is considered a must-see, but many describe it as disappointing: crowded, loud, and more commercial than expected. If you want to see it, arrive before seven; otherwise, it's not worth it.
And the Reeperbahn is an unremarkable street during the day. It only really works in the evening, or not at all, and as a daytime attraction, it's a wasted hour.
