HafenCity is Europe's largest inner-city urban development project and has been growing on former port land east of the Speicherstadt (warehouse district) since the 2000s. For visitors, this means: modern architecture right on the water, short distances, and a district that can be explored on foot in two to three hours.
What makes the neighborhood special
HafenCity is built on artificial mounds, or raised platforms, because the area is not protected by dikes. Therefore, the streets are several meters above the waterfront promenades, and that's why there are stairs leading down everywhere.
That's the key difference compared to any other neighborhood: there are two levels. Traffic flows above, while below you walk along the water. Those who only stay above see half the area.
The goals
- Elbphilharmonie. The plaza, at a height of 37 meters, is freely accessible, but a timed ticket is recommended. From there you can see the entire neighborhood from above.
- International Maritime Museum In Kaispeicher B, the oldest preserved warehouse in the city. Nine floors.
- Prototype Museum, Automotive history in an old warehouse.
- Marco Polo Terraces and Magellan Terraces. Staircases leading down to the water, which in summer become the living rooms of the neighborhood.
- Lohsepark. The large park of HafenCity, with the Hanoverian Station memorial site on its edge.
A walking tour
From the Überseequartier subway station to the Magellan Terraces, then west along the waterfront to the Elbphilharmonie, up to the Plaza, back down, and via the Speicherstadt (warehouse district) back to the starting point. Two hours including breaks, without a single meter of train travel.

Where the district reaches its limits
HafenCity is new, and it shows. There are fewer small shops and pubs than in Ottensen or the Schanze district, and it's quieter in the evenings than you'd expect from a city center location. If you're looking for a lively atmosphere, just take the tram two stops further.

The wind is part of the experience, too. It's strong between the building blocks, and by the water it's regularly several degrees cooler than in the city center. Bringing an extra jacket here isn't about being cautious, it's about having the experience.
The break in the neighborhood
A walk through HafenCity means stairs, cobblestones, and wind. After two hours, most people feel it in their legs, and that's when city life can turn into a nightmare.

Directions and best time
The U4 subway line goes directly into the neighborhood, with stops at Überseequartier and Elbbrücken. Driving is not recommended because parking is scarce and expensive, and the area is designed to be explored on foot anyway.
The best time is early evening in summer, when the sun rises over the Elbe from the west and the terraces are bathed in light. Saturday afternoon is the busiest time, when the Überseequartier shopping center and the promenades are very crowded.
