An oshibori towel is a small terry cloth made of cotton, which is served moistened and at room temperature. Three things are crucial for its quality: the fiber quality of the cotton, the weight per unit area, and the edge finishing. Everything else is just a matter of presentation.
Why cotton and nothing else?
Cotton absorbs many times its own weight in water and releases it again when wiped. Synthetic fibers cannot do this: they distribute moisture instead of absorbing it and feel cooler and smoother on the skin.

The weight per unit area is given in grams per square meter. Lighter cloths dry faster and appear thinner, while heavier ones feel more premium and retain heat longer. A simple test in the store: Dampen a cloth, wring it out, and pull it over your palm. If your hand remains damp instead of clean, the fabric is not absorbent enough.
